Scooters Feel The Love

WHEN insurance company AAMI issued survey results suggesting one-third of drivers considered scooter riders the latest motoring menace, it was probably not anticipating any real negative feedback.

It was wrong, and since that survey's release two major interest groups have come out against the findings.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries suggested AAMI was drawing "a very long bow" with "claims (that) are not supported by their own research".

"Generally if a question in a survey receives only 33 per cent support, then it suggests that 67 per cent did not support that view," FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar said, adding that: "The FCAI believes that the growing numbers of scooter riders are legitimate road users and, like most other road users, the majority of them are responsible and sensible."

Specialist motorbike and scooter insurer InsureMyRide hit back even harder, saying it was drivers, not riders, who needed education on co-existence.

InsureMyRide says its research shows 97 per cent of riders are also car owners, so clearly have a two-way perspective.

"In contrast, car drivers who have never ridden rarely appreciate the rider's perspective.

"Perhaps if 97 per cent of motorists also rode a bike this understanding may be different and there would be a lot fewer collisions," the company's marketing manager, Mark Behr, said.

Horde of HoldensGOT a Holden and want to be part of the gang? Then this Sunday's annual All-Holden Day at Clarendon's Hawkesbury Showground could be the place to fly the flag with friends.

Effectively, anything with a Holden badge and engine can go along to the big day, from the first 48-215 to the latest VE model, and that includes the commercial range as well.

And, say the organisers, it makes no difference if the car is stock, slightly modified or a total custom.

The grounds will be open from 6am and there will be way more than just hundreds and hundreds of Holdens.

There will be a swap meet, trade stalls, rides, drinks and food for those moments when the cars get boring.
